Diffuse
Reflection Probe

StellarNet Inc. offers a low-cost diffuse
reflection probe that is rugged enough for use in industrial process environments, yet
small and light weight enough for use in a laboratory setting. The diffuse reflection
probe is also ideal for use as a fluorescence probe. The optical fiber is 400-micron core
fused silica and is clad in stainless steel armor. If needed, the armor can be sealed with
Teflon® to provide a barrier to the
environment. For process insertion, the probe includes an O-ring seal 1/2 - 20 SAE
straight thread connector; alternatively, an extension tube may be added to the rear of
the probe and can be adapted to the customer's process connection requirements. The probe
is available in both UV and NIR versions, as dictated by the customer's application
needs.
TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS
The diffuse reflection probe makes use of a
tapered six-around-one fiber configuration behind a sapphire window. The taper directs
light from each of the six surrounding fibers towards a sampling region just outside the
sapphire window that overlaps the collection cone of the central fiber. The sapphire
window is brazed into a high purity alumina housing with a gold-nickel alloy. The alumina
housing is sealed to the stainless steel body of the probe using either a Teflon ® or graphite compression ferrule. For more demanding
applications, the brazed sapphire window may be over coated with diamond-like carbon
film.* This film improves corrosion resistance and reduces fouling.
